Problem

These horrible things are covering a shrub in the garden. I can't work out what they are. If anybody knows please let me know. They really disgust me so I'm very close to chopping down and burning the whole thing.
De här äckliga sakerna täcker en av mina buskar i trädgården. Jag har ingen aning om vad de är för nåt, så snälla berätta om du vet. Jag tycker de är helt vidriga så är väldigt nära att hugga ner och bränna alltihop.

I think it's "gum tree scale" - it attacks more than gum trees - you can get rid of it by spraying. We've had it twice in our garden. Uncle Andy

Nina,
Uncle Andy is right; they are Eriococcidae, a type of scale insect which is attracted to eucalyptus and similar bushes which have a lot of resin under their bark. What you are seeing are capsules or ovisacs which protect the female inside until they give birth while they feed off the sap. Without going into insect physiology too much these gals have a complex reproductive ability and are plant wreckers so spray them ASAP now when they are vulnerable. I used to have green fingers until my Mum gave me a hanky!

Ignore my harlequins Nina - I only noticed the first picture not the others! Having Googled, totally agree with Andy - test by squashing "When squashed, Gum Tree Scale are found to contain a reddish-brown fluid"
Oh heavens vine weevils, lily beetles, gum tree scale - whatever next is going to invade!!
Love Chris xx

Thanks for good advice everybody! I have decided to cut it down completely and spray the remains as it's absolutely covered with the little horrors. I will try to save the rose though, which has a lot less on it. Will keep you posted!
